Fundraising can be healthy!

 August 10, 2011

How do we know its fall and the school year has begun?

There is a nip in the air, leaves falling from the trees, football consuming our Sundays, and of course kids and teens knocking on our doors selling a variety of products for school fundraisers.

Unfortunately, many of these products contribute to the obesity epidemic in theU.S.

Don’t get me wrong. We all love cookies, pizza, cheesecake and lots of other fun goodies.   They are however, readily available in  local supermarkets like Hornbachers in reasonable portions at reasonable prices. (And don’t get me started on $25.00 candles?!)

We all agree that fundraisers are a necessity for every school.

I constantly have  parents,  sister-in-laws, teachers, PTA members, principals , and students telling me how frustrated they are about the lack of healthy options for fundraisers.

These same people tell me  there is also a necessity for programs that teach students the tools to counteract issues like, obesity, bullying, drug/ alcohol abuse, and internet and video game abuse.

I have many schools inquiring about my mind/body/fitness/team building/motivation program: POSITIVE MOTION “Movement with a Message”

My goal is to never charge any student to participate in Positive Motion.

That is why I offer the POSITIVE MOTION Fit+Fund+Rai$e program.

POSITIVE MOTION Fit+Fund+Rai$e is an innovative way to raise funds for schools, non profits, and community organizations that gives the contributor the opportunity to invest into the health and fitness of the student, the organization, and their community.

POSITIVE MOTION Fit+Fund+Rai$e supercharges energy into the fund raising process and the outcome by providing materials and support for the organization to reach their fund raising goal.

POSITIVE MOTION Fit+Fund+Rai$e has already been a success in schools and I am hoping to keep the momentum going so we can reach all our students in a healthy way.

Let’s make those knocks at the door turn into healthy fun-ds!

THE LIFE IS RIGHT!

Wow, August is already here!? I must say my summer has been wonderful. Lots of trips to the lake, lots of Positive Motion gigs and even some golf. The best part has been the picnics.

Today I am going to recommend how everyone should start their day

I get up and make my protein “joint vibrance” shake with orange juice, bananas, strawberries and whatever other healthy stuff I can find in the fridge. It helps give me energy to be a “fitness guru-motivational speaker”

I then make my coffee and enjoy my shake with come sort of protein bar. Then I do something that may surprise people. I sit on the couch?! Yep, lots of emails and Facebook to check and the weather and maybe take a quick check on a couple entertainment websites.

I tape Regis and Kelly and take about an hour to really concentrate on computer work which is a very solitary endeavor and not so interesting for a “people person” like me.

Then time to get the fun started and to explain the title of this “PLOG” I jump on my treadmill and put on my headphones with the newest gaga mix and turn on “The Price is Right!”

Now, I must admit, I boycotted The Price is Right when Drew Carey started. Nothing against him mind you, just missed good ol’ Bob Barker. Plus Drew did not seem to have the same Moxie as good ol’ Bob even though he is about 40 years younger!! (BTW, try to explain the word “Moxie” to middle schoolers. I used the word when I was choreographing this summer and I just pretty much said um…”Lady GaGa and the Beibs have lots of it!”)

So even though I am not crazy about Drew, I have the perfect solution now. Crank my treadmill running music and watch The Price is Right!!

Why do I do this and recommend it to everyone? (Tape it if you work or go to school kids)

Because the show is  inspiring and encouraging and motivating  which are the 3 big words I talk about when I go out and do Positive Motion gigs.

The people are excited to “COME ON DOWN” and they “high five” and share their joy with complete strangers and very very happy to be there. As the bidding begins there is a sense of community and noone rooting againts anyone. (Which is a huge reason I don’t go to alot of sporting events, which is a whole other PLOG.)

When the contestants bid there way up to stage everyone claps for them and they feel happy for the opportunity to succeed to the next level. The people in “Contestants row” seem to form a bond as the show goes on even though they may have done the dreaded “one dollar over bid” to them.

Even when the Swiss Alp yodeler falls off the mountain or PLINKO is a bust or they just missed winning the barbecue pit by a dollar people keep on smiling and supporting each other.

I think life should be like this! In the morning tell your friends and family to “come on down” and have a chance for awesome opportunities by being positive and keep on buddy-bidding with support and energy!

We may not always win the Jacuzzi, the trip toRomeor the snowmobiles but we will for sure have fun when THE LIFE IS RIGHT!

We should all live in “Contestants row everyday and do our best to support each other.

And remember have your pets spayed and neutered! (I couldn’t resist)

And have a POSITIVE MOTION day

POSITIVE MOTION on WDAY!

PLOG 12-13-2010

Today was an awesome day living in Positive Motion. Kevin Wallevand from WDAY came to Horizon Middle School to do a story about how we can teach our kids and teens the tools to be happier and healthier, by helping them increase their self esteem.
The theater students at Horizon have been participating in the POSITIVE MOTION Fit+Fund+Rai$e Program.
The kids have sold cookie dough in the past to pay for their theater production, but this year the teachers could not in good conscience continue this method with the obesity epidemic among our your people.

We asked people where money where was being spent? The answer from so many parents was…”We educate our children to be fit, and we put healthy things in the school vending machines and then they have to go out and sell cookie dough, pizza, butter braids..etc”
Now we have the opportunity to Inspire, Encourage and Motivate the students with exercise, nutrition, team building workshops and communications skill classes. That way we all invest into the health of the students, the school and the community with the POSITIVE MOTION Fit+Fund+Rai$e Program.
If a theater student asks you to sponsor them please listen to their message and ask questions so they can articulate and communicate their “Sweat Equity mission” I am sure they will show you an “Attitude of Gratitude!” so we can create a “Positive Motion –Cycle of Success!”

POSITIVE MOTION intro

As I start my first PLOG (Patrick’s log) for area voices I need to say a quick thank you to Tracy Briggs Jensen.
Hey energy is greatly appreciated and her enthusiasm and follow up got me excited about sharing my thoughts and adventures. Thank you Tracy for getting me involved with area voices.

I am the creator-presenter of the mind/body fitness/team building program POSITIVE MOTION.

It is my passion to Inspire, Encourage, and Motivate people to live happier and healthier lives.

We are all very well aware of the obesity epidemic in the United States, and how it is affecting our young people. I believe issues like obesity, bullying, internet abuse, alcohol abuse and tobacco use are all related and we need programs and people to teach our students the tools to supercharge their self esteem and live in “Pro-action instead of dis-traction.”

I began my journey in north Fargo and somehow went from a quiet, chubby, bashful kid in “Husky Jeans” to traveling the world and living my dream; therefore, it is my mission and to be a role model for the 12-20 generation, as I share Positive Motion.

When I am talking with young people I begin my presentation by telling them:
“You are NOT the future, as people have told you”…………..You are the NOW.
WE are the now, and it is time to Inspire, Encourage and Motivate everyone around us to live in POSITIVE MOTION.
